Hello,

The best is first to be willing to spend the time to really understand the commonalities and differences between Roman Catholicism or Protestantism and Orthodoxy (Eastern Orthodox Church).

In most cases, a person begins the process of conversion by speaking with a local Orthodox priest, who gives instructions (or catechism) on the teachings and beliefs of the Orthodox Church. These beliefs and doctrines have continued unchanged for over 2000 years, since the time of Jesus and the Twelve Apostles. This process of catechism could take many months. Once you have learned about the faith and teachings of the church, you would then be ready to be baptized as a member of the Orthodox Church, in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (ie. the Holy Trinity). Baptism is by triple immersion in water. At the same time, you would be Chrismated, which means receiving the Holy Oil and the Holy Spirit.

During the last two weeks of July 2014 the Hawaiian Myrrh Streaming Iveron Icon traveled throughout Alaska. Numerous miracles and blessings were bestowed on the faithful. Her travels by land, sea and air were marked by unusually consistent fair weather. In addition to traveling to every parish and monastic community on Kodiak Island, she traveled throughout the greater Anchorage area and the Kenai Peninsula.

There is a little-known irony in the controversy between creationists and evolutionists about the age of the world. The majority of scientists— the evolutionists—rely on a minority of the relevant data. Yet a minority of scientists—the creationists—use the majority of the relevant data.2 Adding to the irony is the public’s wrong impression that it is the other way around. Therefore, many ask: “If the evidence is so strongly for a young earth, why do most scientists believe otherwise?” The answer is simple: Most scientists believe the earth is old because they believe mostother scientists believe the earth is old!

There are many categories of evidence for the age of the earth and the cosmos that indicate they are much younger than is generally asserted today.

Going round in circles

They trust in what’s called ‘circular reasoning’, not data. I once encountered such a clear example of this misplaced trust, that I made detailed notes immediately. It happened when I spoke with a young (in his early thirties, career-ambitious, and upwardly mobile) geochemist at Sandia National Laboratories, where I then worked as a physicist. I presented him with one piece of evidence for a young world, the rapid accumulation of sodium in the ocean. It was ideal, since much of geochemistry deals with chemicals in the ocean.

I wanted to see how he explained possible ways for sodium to get out of the sea fast enough to balance the rapid input of sodium to the sea. Creationist geologist Steve Austin and I wanted the information in order to complete a scientific paper on the topic.3 We went around and around the issue for an hour, but he finally admitted he knew of no way to remove sodium from the sea fast enough. That would mean the sea could not be billions of years old. Realizing that, he said, “Since we know from other sciences that the ocean is billions of years old, such a removal process must exist.”

I questioned whether we ‘know’ that at all and started to mention some of the other evidence for a young world. He interrupted me, agreeing that he probably didn’t know even one percent of such data, since the science journals he depended on had not pointed it out as being important. But he did not want to examine the evidence for himself, because, he said, “People I trust don’t accept creation!”

Faith, not science

I asked him which people he was relying upon. His answer was, “I trust Steven Jay Gould!” (At that time Gould, a paleontologist, was still alive and considered the world’s most prominent evolutionist.) Thus the geochemist revealed his main reason for thinking the earth is old:“people I trust” i.e., scientific authorities, had declared it. I was surprised that he didn’t see the logical inconsistency of his own position. He trusted Gould and other authorities but ignored highly relevant data!

Perhaps the geochemist thought it so unlikely the earth is young that he wasn’t going to waste time investigating the possibility himself. But if that were the case, then it shows another way the old-world myth perpetuates itself—by intellectual inertia.

I remember having similar attitudes when I was a grad student in physics, while I was still an evolutionist. I was wondering about a seeming inconsistency in biological evolutionism. But, I told myself, surely the experts know the answer, and I’ve got my dissertation research to do. I had no idea that (a) the experts had no answer for it, and (b) the implications were extremely important, affecting my entire worldview.

Before I became a Christian, I resisted evidence for a recent creation because of its spiritual implications. The geochemist might also be resisting such implications, and was merely using scientific authority as a convenient excuse.

Many scientists are not the independent seekers of truth the public imagines, so the public should not trust them blindly. For a variety of reasons, scientists depend on other scientists to be correct, even when they themselves have some reason for doubt. Unfortunately, as most creationist scientists can tell you, the young geochemist’s reaction is not at all exceptional. Many scientists, without serious questioning, trust the opinions of their own ‘experts’. However, I’m happy to report that others, when presented with creationist data, have become very interested and have investigated it. Many have become creationists that way, as I did.

Σέ μία μαθήτριά του ὀνόματι Θεοδώρα Σ., ἀπ᾽ τό Βουκουρέστι, τῆς ἔλεγε ἐνίοτε γιά τόν πατέρα της Θεόδωρο, πῶς θά τόν πλησίαζε [αὐτός]. Νά ἔτσι. “Θεόδωρε, Θεόδωρέ μου, σοῦ ἀρέσει τό κρασί;…”. Οι μεντιουμιστικές ομάδες ταυτίζουν τους προφήτες της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης με τα μέντιουμ του αποκρυφι­σμού και υποστηρίζουν πως και οι προφήτες ήσαν ένα είδος μέντιουμ.

Στον πνευματισμό τα μέντιουμ λογίζονται μεσά­ζοντα ανάμεσα στον δικό μας κόσμο και στον πνευματικό κόσμο και πιστεύεται πως χωρίς τα μέντιουμ δεν είναι δυνατή η επικοινωνία. Όμως η θέση αυτή είναι για κάθε πιστό απαράδεκτη, γιατί η κοινωνία ανάμεσα στην στρατευόμενη και στην θριαμβεύουσα Εκκλησία πραγματοποιείται πάντοτε εν Χριστώ, αφού, όπως πι­στεύουμε, όλοι είμαστε ενωμένοι στο Σώμα του Χριστού, εις εν Χριστώ και αλλήλων μέλη. Γι’ αυτό και δεν υπάρχει μεσίτης ή μεσάζων έξω από τον Χριστό (Α’ Τιμ. 2, 5).

Ακόμη υπάρχει διαφορά στον τρόπο κλήσης ενός προφήτη. Ο προφήτης δεν είναι αυτόκλητος. Αντίθετα η ανταπόκρισή του είναι καρπός της θείας εντολής, όχι ελευθέρας προαίρεσης. Ο Μωυσής εκφράζει σοβαρές αντιρρήσεις στην κλήση του˙«τις ειμί εγώ˙εάν μη πιστεύσωσί μοι, μηδέ εισακούσωσι της φωνής μου, ερούσι γαρ, ότι ουκ έσται σοι ο Θεός, τι ερώ προς αυτούς; δέομαι, Κύριε, ούχ ικανός ειμί… προχείρισαι δυνάμενον άλλον, ον αποστελείς» (Έξοδ. 3, 11. & 4, 1-13).

Κάτι τέτοιο δεν συμβαίνει με τα μέντιουμ. Έτσι για το μέντιουμ Kevin Ryerson από τις ΗΠΑ αναφέρεται πως από μικρό παιδί ενδιαφέρετο για υπερφυσικά φαινόμε­να και μελετούσε βιβλία παραψυχολογίας και μεταφυ­σικής, με στόχο το Channelling. Το ότι έγινε μέντιουμ δεν ήταν δηλαδή κάτι ξαφνικό, αντίθετο με τη θέλησή του, αλλά ήταν ένα είδος ελεύθερης επιλογής του ε­παγγέλματος του μέντιουμ. Στις διαφημίσεις των τηλε­φωνικών μας καταλόγων αναφέρεται πολλές φορές η προσφορά: «Οι έχοντες έμφυτον δύναμιν, δύνανται να αξιοποιήσουν τα προσόντα τους»(διπλώματα)!

Ο αληθινός προφήτης έχει τη συναίσθηση της μηδαμινότητός του που φθάνει μέχρι τα όρια της απόγνω­σης· «Ηπάτησάς με, Κύριε, και ηπατήθην, εκράτησας και ηδυνάσθης· εγενόμην εις γέλωτα, πάσαν ημέραν διετέλεσα μυκτηριζόμενος»(Ιερεμ. 20, 7). Διαφορετική είναι η έκφραση του μέντιουμ, γεμάτη έπαρση και θράσος. Η γλώσσα που συνηθίζεται είναι σαν την α­κόλουθη, όπως χρησιμοποιείται για την αυτοδιαφήμηση μέντιουμ στον τηλεφωνικό κατάλογο:

«Προβλέπω και αποκαλύπτω τα πάντα. Επικοινω­νώ με ζώντα πρόσωπα που σας ενδιαφέρουν. Σας μετα­βιβάζω τη σκέψη τους και σας ενημερώνω περί των αισθημάτων και της υγείας των. Δύναμαι να σας περι­γράψω τα χαρακτηριστικά των. Δια υποβολής (μεγάλης ισχύος πομπού δέκτη) βοηθώ στην επίλυση προβλημά­των και επαναφορά προσώπων! Ψυχοθεραπευτής-Αστρολόγος Κ.Σ. Πρόεδρος κ.τ.λ., Επίτιμος Διδάκτωρ… προσφέρω μαθήματα επαγγελματικά, οικονομικά, οικο­γενειακά… δέχομαι με ραντεβού 10.30 – 2.00 μ.μ. και 6.30 μ.μ. Καλλιδρομίου… τηλ…».

Τα μέντιουμ, ιδιαίτερα στο ονομαζόμενο Channel­ling, συζητούν προηγουμένως με τον πελάτη και μπο­ρούν έτσι να προσδιορίσουν τις απαντήσεις που του χρειάζονται, με τον ισχυρισμό πως προέρχονται από τον πνευματικό κόσμο. Όμως ο αληθινός προφήτης δεν καταπιάνεται με προσωπικές υποθέσεις αλλά απευ­θύνεται σε ολόκληρο το λαό ή στους εκπροσώπους του και τους καλεί να επανέλθουν στη Διαθήκη του Κυρίου, να ενθυμηθούν τις συμφωνίες του Θεού.

Ο αληθινός προφήτης δεν ανοίγει επιχείρηση παροχής υπηρεσιών, ούτε προσκαλείται από τους αν­θρώπους˙ πορεύεται εκείνος προς αυτούς. Ένας αληθι­νός προφήτης δεν θα μπορούσε ποτέ να αυτοδιαφημισθεί:

«Μέντιουμ ψυχοθεραπεύτρια Κούλα Κ., Χειρομάντης δι­πλωματούχος Βασίλης, δέχεται για οποιαδήποτε υπόθε­ση σας απασχολεί… Αμοίβεται μετά την επιτυχία (δια­φήμιση στον τηλεφ. κατάλογο)». Ένας αληθινός προ­φήτης δεν ζητάει αμοιβή!

Το περιεχόμενο του μηνύματος του αληθινού προ­φήτη δεν είναι νέο αλλά παλαιό, που έχει λησμονηθεί˙είναι ο λόγος της Διαθήκης του Κυρίου, που λησμονή­θηκε από τον αποστάτη άνθρωπο. Γι’ αυτό και ο προφήτης απαιτεί από τον Λαό να πάρει θέση! Αντίθετα στον μεντιουμισμό το περιεχόμενο της πίστης και του θρησκευτικού μηνύματος δεν είναι σταθερό και προσ­διορίζεται από τις νέες αποκαλύψεις, οι οποίες απολυτοποιούνται και πιστεύεται πως η προέλευσή τους εί­ναι θεία.

De multe ori, noi, românii, avem nevoie de un suflet convertit la Ortodoxie pentru a ne arăta comoara primită de noi de la strămoşi: credinţa drept-măritoare. Monahul Kyrill de la mănăstirea bucureşteană Radu Vodă este german de origine şi a ajuns „acasă“, în Ortodoxie, după pribegia prin luteranism, catolicism, hinduism sau budism.

Botezat în urmă cu cinci ani în biserica Mănăstirii Radu Vodă, pe când avea 20 de ani, părintele Kyrill povesteşte despre căutările sale spirituale: „Am ajuns în urma unei căutări foarte lungi, începută în tinereţea mea. Copil fiind, am avut setea asta după Dumnezeu, după Adevăr şi am căutat religia adevărată. În toţi acei ani, parcă cineva mi-a ţinut căile respiratorii, dar, în momentul botezului, mi-a luat mâinile de pe gât, trăgând pentru prima dată aer în piept. A fost extraordinar, atât raţional, cât şi sufletesc, am simţit ce înseamnă a avea viaţă. Acum, când mă uit înapoi, mi se pare că nu am trăit până am devenit ortodox. Sigur au fost nişte experienţe importante, dar abia acum simt că trăiesc“.

Pentru tânărul Nimai Karthaus din Germania, monahul Kyrill de astăzi, acest drum al regăsirii a fost lung. L-a cunoscut pe Dumnezeu în urma unei călătorii. A făcut primul pas spre Dumnezeu când a cerut la vârsta de 10 ani să fie botezat în Biserica Luterană, religia mamei sale. A urmat cursurile catehetice şi a primit confirmarea la 14 ani. Însă luteranismul nu i-a potolit setea de Dumnezeu. Impresionat de seriozitatea cu care tatăl său îşi practica religia sa, mişcarea hindusă Hare Krishna, a călătorit alături de acesta în India. „Am participat la slujbe, am dansat înaintea idolilor, am rostit mantre, dar niciodată nu m-am simţit împlinit acolo. Totdeauna a rămas un gol înăuntrul meu. L-am întâlnit chiar şi pe Dalai Lama. A fost o experienţă unică, impresionantă şi am rămas atras de budism. Însă Dalai Lama exportează budismul adaptat, nu este budismul autentic. Ceea ce ajunge la noi este un budism de marketing, adaptat la nevoile noastre. Dacă se înţelege ce înseamnă budismul în fapt, eu nu cred că ar mai avea aşa de mulţi adepţi în Occident“, spune monahul Kyrill. Tatăl său nu l-a forţat să se convertească la religia sa, şi pentru asta îi mulţumeşte: „Mi-a lăsat libertatea să aleg. Bineînţeles, totdeauna a răspuns la întrebările mele, şi nu au fost puţine. Am văzut cum trăieşte el, cum se scoală de dimineaţa rostind mantre, cum slujeşte la paraclisul hinduist din casa noastră. Dar, ştiţi, sunt mai multe trepte, printre care raţionamentul şi sufletul. Nici la una, nici la alta nu au reuşit nici budismul, nici hinduismul, nici islamul să răspundă în mod satisfăcător. Am găsit răspunsul abia după ce am ajuns la Ortodoxie, deoarece creştinismul ortodox este singura religie unde există dragostea adevărată. Nu se găseşte la nici o altă religie în forma aceasta.“ Şi ne-a explicat de ce nu a ales nici una dintre aceste religii: „În budism totul este iluzie, nu există sine. Ce nu există nu poţi să iubeşti. La sfârşit este integrarea în nimic, nu mai este nici dragoste, nici ură, nu mai există nimic. În islam este Allah care iubeşte doar pe cei care cred în el, doar pe cei care sunt drept-credincioşi, chiar se spune în Coran că urăşte pe păcătoşi. Însă în creştinism Dumnezeu iubeşte păcătoşii. Atunci când Mântuitorul Iisus Hristos este întrebat de ce mănâncă cu păcătoşii, El răspunde că doar cei bolnavi au nevoie de doctor, nu cei sănătoşi. În hinduism sunt zei care ei înşişi sunt stăpâniţi de patimi. Doar în creştinism este dragostea faţă de păcătoşi, aici există dragostea adevărată“.

Dacă India l-a îndepărtat de creştinism, tot India l-a readus la creştinism. „Creştinismul ortodox a fost singura religie care mi-a oferit un răspuns la problema suferinţei. De multe ori în viaţa mea am fost confruntat cu problema suferinţei. În a doua călătorie în India, la Mumbai, am fost la un ordin catolic de maici care s-au dedicat slujirii aproapelui, având grijă de copiii suferinzi de toate bolile. A fost groaznic ce am văzut acolo. Jertfa maicilor m-a readus spre creştinism, cu toate că eu nu m-am dezis niciodată cu totul de creştinism“, mărturiseşte monahul Kyrill.

„Ceva s-a întâmplat în sufletul meu“

Primul contact cu Ortodoxia a fost în cea mai secularizată ţară europeană. La 19 ani a lucrat în Franţa pe timp de vară ca voluntar la un centru social pentru persoane cu dizabilităţi. Din pronia lui Dumnezeu, la acest centru au venit şi voluntari români. „Într-o seară, când noi, voluntarii, am făcut fiecare o mică prezentare a ţării lui, românii au cântat un cântec psaltic. Am rămas copleşit, am şi plâns, cu toate că nu am înţeles nici un cuvânt. Ceva s-a întâmplat în sufletul meu. Şi, după experienţa aceasta, am venit în România în acea toamnă. Până să vin aici, m-am interesat de muzica psaltică, am început să citesc cărţi traduse în limba germană. «Pelerinul rus» m-a influenţat foarte mult pentru că vorbeşte foarte frumos despre rugăciunea inimii. Sfântul Siluan Athonitul a avut un rol crucial în convertirea mea, nici astăzi nu pot să mă satur să citesc din scrierile sale, este ceva minunat. Am citit şi catehismul ortodox apărut în Franţa, «Viu este Dumnezeu», tradus şi în germană“, mărturiseşte monahul Kyrill.

Când a ajuns în România, a vizitat Mănăstirea Radu Vodă, primul lăcaş ortodox căruia i-a trecut pragul. „Era slujba Vecerniei. A fost copleşitor pentru mine. M-am convins că aici este adevărul şi am avut dorinţa să mă botez ortodox. Părintele arhim. Policarp Chiţulescu, directorul Bibliotecii Sfântului Sinod, singurul părinte care ştia limba franceză, mi-a spus să citesc anumite cărţi, să învăţ Crezul şi alte lucruri importante şi mi-a zis să mă întorc de Crăciun. Aşa am rămas în contact cu el, am vorbit prin mail, m-a catehizat şi m-a botezat chiar de Naşterea Domnului, aici la Mănăstirea Radu Vodă“, îşi aminteşte neamţul care a primit la botez numele Antim. În vara următoare, în anul 2008, dragostea de „acasă“ l-a readus în România. Şi-a făcut serviciul militar muncind în folosul comunităţii la un centru pentru copiii străzii din Bucureşti. „Eu am ales varianta aceasta pentru ca să cunosc mai bine Ortodoxia. Am avut aşa o dragoste de ţara aceasta…“, se destăinuie monahul Kyrill, care s-a mutat definitiv în noua lui patrie, în februarie 2009, când a intrat ca frate la Mănăstirea Radu Vodă.

„Eu m-am gândit aşa: sunt convins că Dumnezeu există, atunci vreau să mă dăruiesc cu totul lui Dumnezeu, necondiţionat, vreau să mă aduc «ardere de tot»“. Astfel, neamţul Nimai Karthaus, Antim după botezul creştin-ortodox, s-a dăruit cu totul lui Dumnezeu, luând voturile monahale în Duminica Ortodoxiei din Postul Sfintelor Paşti de anul acesta. Şi-a ales numele Kyrill, scris după regulile limbii germane. „Mă simt foarte apropiat de România, pentru că aici am fost botezat, adică am primit naşterea din nou, aici am fost călugărit, care este tot o naştere. Deci, după trup m-am născut în Germania, dar după suflet în România“, mărturiseşte monahul Kyrill de la Radu Vodă.

Στην εποχή μας, 2.015 χρόνια μετά τον Χριστό, μια εποχή προόδου και μεγάλων επιστημονικών, ιατρικών και τεχνολογικών ανακαλύψεων, κάποιοι συνάνθρωποί μας εμφανίζονται να σκέπτονται και να συμπεριφέρονται με δεισιδαιμονικό και θρησκόληπτο τρόπο, που θα έπρεπε να ισχύει μόνο στις πρωτόγονες φυλές και τους μάγους των ειδωλολατρικών χρόνων. Ακόμη και σήμερα δυστυχώς, μετά τη ζωογόνο επικράτηση του Χριστιανισμού και αφού ήδη από τον Ιουδαϊσμό της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης τα ουράνια σώματα και οι φυσικές δυνάμεις έχουν απομυθοποιηθεί -διότι θεωρήθηκαν, πολύ σωστά, δημιουργήματα και όχι θεοί (αρχή της επιστήμης)- πολλοί άνθρωποι αρέσκονται να επισκέπτονται μάγους και πνευματιστές, να καταφεύγουν σε μάντεις, ονειροερμηνευτές, καφετζούδες, χαρτορίχτρες, οραματίστριες, ταρωγνώστες κ.λπ. για να μάθουν υποτίθεται το μέλλον τους, να λύσουν τα προβλήματά τους, να διαλευκάνουν αν τους απατά το ταίρι τους, να βρουν τα χαμένα τους αντικείμενα, να μιλήσουν με συχωρεμένους γονείς, συγγενείς, φίλους κ.α.

Οι λόγοι, κοινωνιολογικά και ψυχολογικά, είναι γνωστοί: Το άγχος της σύγχρονης ζωής, τα μύρια καθημερινά προβλήματα, οι προστριβές με τους άλλους και η ανάγκη διεξόδου, η περιέργεια για τον μεταφυσικό κόσμο, οι αναζητούμενες εμπειρίες της Νέας Εποχής που σχετίζονται με πνευματιστικές ενέργειες, αύρας, κρυστάλλων, ζωδίων κ.ο.κ., ωθούν ορισμένους στην εξερεύνηση μεταφυσικών χώρων και στην προσπάθεια αντλήσεως πληροφοριών υπέρ «εαυτών και αλλήλων». Όταν μιλάμε για «Νέα Εποχή» εννοούμε ένα μόρφωμα από αρχαίες θρησκείες, ειδωλολατρία, μεσαιωνικό συμβολισμό, πανθεϊσμό, πνευματισμό και γνωστικισμό, που αντιτίθεται γενικά στον χριστιανισμό παγκοσμίως. Μέσω της ‘νέας εποχής’ απλώνεται σήμερα και ο νεοσατανισμός, ντυμένος δυστυχώς με επιστημονικό μανδύα.

Χριστιανικά και φιλοσοφικά οι τάσεις και πρακτικές αυτές δείχνουν πνευματική οπισθοδρόμηση. Ο σκοτισμένος από τη φθορά, την υπαρξιακή αγωνία και την απομάκρυνση από το Θεό άνθρωπος, αντί να αναζητά το δρόμο της επιστροφής, της χαράς και της ευτυχίας του στον Τριαδικό Θεό, προτιμά να αρνείται καθημερινά τα σημάδια της ελπίδας και της απύθμενης αγάπης του μόνου αληθινού Θεού (μετάνοια, εκκλησιαστική λατρεία, μυστηριακή ζωή, προσευχή, ανάγνωση Αγίας Γραφής, Θεία Κοινωνία κ.λπ.), που προσφέρονται δωρεάν για τη σωτηρία του κόσμου, και να επισκέπτεται και εντρυφά σε χώρους μαντείας, παραδοξολογίας και απελπισίας. Αποτέλεσμα: Να τρώνε με χρυσά κουτάλια οι κάθε είδους εκμεταλλευτές της αμάθειας και της ευπιστίας του καθενός!.. Οι οποίοι απομυζούν το όνειρο, την πνευματική λεβεντιά και την ελπίδα του κοσμάκη.

Σε τέτοιο δυστυχώς χαμηλό επίπεδο (α)παιδείας και κριτικής (αν)ικανότητας ξεπέσαμε ορισμένοι νεοέλληνες; Να καταφεύγουμε σε αστρολόγους, μέντιουμ, χαρτομάντες και καφετζούδες για να ορθοποδήσουμε στη ζωή μας; Να εξαρτιόμαστε πνευματικά, αλλά και πολιτιστικά, πολιτικά και υλικά (αφού υφαρπάζονται μεγάλες περιουσίες για να γίνουν οι προβλέψεις σε επώνυμους και μη) από τον κάθε τυχαίο «απόφοιτο» μεταφυσικών δήθεν σχολών, ή εσωτερικής φιλοσοφίας, ή ενεργειακής αύρας και χειροπρακτικής, ή αποκρυφιστικών τεχνών, ή εξωσωματικών εμπειριών ή ενίοτε υποτιθέμενο ανατολίτη ‘ειδικό’ και να εμπιστευόμαστε το μέλλον μας (που διαμορφώνεται από τη δική μας θέληση και τη δική μας ελεύθερη προσωπικότητα) σε κάποιους, που μόνο εμπιστοσύνη δεν αποπνέουν, αλλά μόνο ιδιοτελή συμφέροντα και υλιστικά κίνητρα; Είναι γνωστό εξάλλου το εμπόριο μαντικών αντικειμένων, το οποίο έχει και τεράστια κέρδη και προωθείται από συναφείς εταιρείες ή λέσχες και συλλόγους εσωτερισμού, που μυστικά ή φανερά διαδίδουν τη μαγικού περιεχομένου φιλοσοφία τους και πωλούν τελετουργικά όργανα, κρυστάλλους της Νέας Εποχής (κομμάτια χαλαζία, που θεωρούν κάποιοι σύγχρονα φυλακτά ) και δήθεν ισχυρά φίλτρα.

Ο αριθμός αυτών των παραθρησκευτικών ομάδων είναι μεγάλος. Ορισμένες παραμυθιάζουν τον κόσμο με σύγχρονες ενεργειακές και πνευματιστικές τεχνικές (όπως το ‘ρέϊκι’ και το ‘τσάνελλινγκ’ π.χ.), με αμφισβητούμενη εξωτική φιλοσοφία, με δυτικού τύπου γιόγκα και διαλογισμό κ.λπ. [Η γιόγκα και ο διαλογισμός είναι θρησκευτικές ινδουιστικές τεχνικές και όχι γυμναστικές ασκήσεις, όπως προσφέρονται πλέον για χρηματισμό ορισμένων. Όπως ακριβώς δεν μπορούμε να απομονώσουμε τις ‘μετάνοιες’ στην Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία από το θρησκευτικό τους περιεχόμενο και να τις θεωρήσουμε σαν γυμναστική]. Μεγάλη προσοχή χρειάζεται ακόμη και στα διάφορα ‘φυλακτά’ που διαφημίζονται και πωλούνται. Πολλά έχουν αμφιβόλου προελεύσεως σύμβολα, ιδιαίτερα εκείνα που μαζί με τα χριστιανικά σύμβολα συνδυάζουν και κάποιο περίεργο «γούρι» για να δημιουργούν περισσότερη σύγχυση.

Οι άνθρωποι που εντάσσονται σε τέτοια περιβάλλοντα και υποτάσσονται σε θρησκοληψίες είναι ή καταντούν δυστυχισμένοι! Η ζωή τους γεμίζει φόβο και αγωνία. Διώχνουν τον Θεό μακριά και προσκυνούν ειδωλολατρικά τεχνάσματα ή ακόμη ειδωλικά κατασκευάσματα! Δεσμεύεται η θέληση και υπηρετούν είτε τον αρχηγό κάποιας ύπουλης οργάνωσης είτε την ειμαρμένη και τη δεισιδαιμονία. Γι’  αυτό και  η Εκκλησία εύστοχα καταδικάζει όλα τα παραπάνω και μας καλεί όλους να μείνουμε μακριά από τέτοιες ιδεολογίες και πρακτικές. Ο χριστιανισμός ελευθερώνει τον άνθρωπο, καθώς η γνώση του αληθινού Θεού και η συνειδητή συμμετοχή μας στην Εκκλησία ρίχνει φως στα μεγάλα ερωτήματα της ζωής. Η μαγεία, η μαντεία και η δεισιδαιμονία καταδικάζουν σε άγνοια, δυστυχία, ξεπεσμό, πνευματικό σκοτάδι. Όσοι καταφεύγουν στις σύγχρονες νεοεποχίτικες τεχνικές, και δεσμεύονται έτσι στον αποκρυφισμό και τις παραθρησκείες, σε αστρολόγους, ονειροκρίτες, χαρτομάντεις, καφεμάντεις, μέντιουμ και οραματιστές, αρνούνται στην ουσία το Θεό στη ζωή τους και εμποδίζουν το Άγιο Πνεύμα να μιλήσει στην καρδιά τους. Υποτάσσονται, πολλές φορές εν αγνωσία τους, στα έργα του σκότους, της φθοράς και της ματαιοδοξίας, ενώ αντίθετα η ιστορία είναι γεμάτη από παραδείγματα χριστιανικής ζωής που διαχρονικά και προσωπικά τελειοποιεί και αγιάζει ανθρώπινους χαρακτήρες. Στη Θεία Λειτουργία αυτό συνοψίζεται στην πρόταση:«Εαυτούς και αλλήλους, και πάσαν την ζωήν ημών, Χριστώ τω Θεώ παραθώμεθα».

What exactly is there to teach a child (or a teenager, for that matter)? In what ways is it beneficial for a child to sit down and learn about the Holy Trinity or Christ’s two natures? Is that where we should start? Are dogmas the central focus?

To me, church school is an interesting, but completely alien concept. The idea that I may go to church for anything else except worship feels strange. The notion that I can be taught about worship – by any other means except worship itself – is also strange. I instinctively dislike the thought that someone would try to ‘school’ me about God.

As a monastic, I haven’t had the experience of raising my own children. But I was a child once, and my memories of those years are all built around emotions, not knowledge: I remember playing, I remember my best friends, I remember some of the naughty jokes we played on the old people (that is, anyone over 20). I also remember nice old ladies (and their pockets filled with sweets) and grumpy old men (who always had some seriously boring advice to share). I remember colours, singing, the smell of incense. The only services I remember are the commemorations of the departed (because we always got a lot of koliva and candy) and singing Christmas carols (for the same reason: candy, candy, candy).

As a teenager, things changed. The nice old ladies and the grumpy old men became my enemies – it wasn’t their fault, but hormones do strange things to people. The only thought I had concerning church was: never again. It was boring, attended by old people (this time, anyone over 30) and completely irrelevant to my own life. The worst thing would have been having to confess or attend some sort of church school. I tried once to confess as a teenager and I couldn’t deal with it; it felt as an intrusion, almost like an abuse. I also refused to study religion in school – we had to choose between religion and applied science. I preferred to dissect frogs and look at their insides. THAT was cool.

I do have some good church memories from that time, though. I remember visiting an asylum for old people. I remember an old lady (really old, in her 90s), who used to be a French teacher in her youth. She asked me if I spoke any French. We then spoke for a few minutes and she was crying all the time. We talked about the weather and my age and things like that, and she silently cried through the whole conversation. I remember realising for the first time that the world is filled with suffering and that I can actually do something to take some of that suffering away.

That was the first time I felt a real connection between me and Christ. When I went back to church, the Cross suddenly had a different look. Out of everything in the church, that Christ on the Cross seemed to be looking straight at me and calling me; we had a secret, I had been revealed something – this time, it was about me. It was relevant; and personal.

Perhaps it may help to look at these things from the child’s perspective. When they are young, make sure they create beautiful memories in church. Build a small playground for them, be nice to them – help them feel loved. If you help them associate Love and Christ, Love and Church, you’ve introduced them to the deepest theology. As they grow older and become teenagers, get them involved in the real things: visits to orphanages, asylums, hospitals, prisons etc. Make their time count.

All they need to know about dogmas and doctrine they’ll get from attending the services, from the random things they pick up from sermons, from the bits and pieces of an accidental discussion. Build Christian values in them, not Christian knowledge. Work with their hearts, rather than their minds, because the theology of the heart cannot be erased. If you teach them love and compassion, you’ve taught them enough. If you help them love God and the world around them, you’ve introduced them into a living experience of Christ’s commandments. Rather than knowing what His commandments are, your children will be living them. Trust Christ to do the rest.

Saint Patrick, the Enlightener of Ireland was born around 385, the son of Calpurnius, a Roman decurion (an official responsible for collecting taxes). He lived in the village of Bannavem Taberniae, which may have been located at the mouth of the Severn River in Wales. The district was raided by pirates when Patrick was sixteen, and he was one of those taken captive. He was brought to Ireland and sold as a slave, and was put to work as a herder of swine on a mountain identified with Slemish in Co. Antrim. During his peri
od of slavery, Patrick acquired a proficiency in the Irish language which was very useful to him in his later mission.

He prayed during his solitude on the mountain, and lived this way for six years. He had two visions. The first told him he would return to his home. The second told him his ship was ready. Setting off on foot, Patrick walked two hundred miles to the coast. There he succeeded in boarding a ship, and returned to his parents in Britain.

Some time later, he went to Gaul and studied for the priesthood at Auxerre under St Germanus (July 31). Eventually, he was consecrated as a bishop, and was entrusted with the mission to Ireland, succeeding St Palladius (July 7). St Palladius did not achieve much success in Ireland. After about a year he went to Scotland, where he died in 432.

Patrick had a dream in which an angel came to him bearing many letters. Selecting one inscribed “The Voice of the Irish,” he heard the Irish entreating him to come back to them.

Although St Patrick achieved remarkable results in spreading the Gospel, he was not the first or only missionary in Ireland. He arrived around 432 (though this date is disputed), about a year after St Palladius began his mission to Ireland. There were also other missionaries who were active on the southeast coast, but it was St Patrick who had the greatest influence and success in preaching the Gospel of Christ. Therefore, he is known as “The Enlightener of Ireland.”

His autobiographical Confession tells of the many trials and disappointments he endured. Patrick had once confided to a friend that he was troubled by a certain sin he had committed before he was fifteen years old. The friend assured him of God’s mercy, and even supported Patrick’s nomination as bishop. Later, he turned against him and revealed what Patrick had told him in an attempt to prevent his consecration. Many years later, Patrick still grieved for his dear friend who had publicly shamed him.

St Patrick founded many churches and monasteries across Ireland, but the conversion of the Irish people was no easy task. There was much hostility, and he was assaulted several times. He faced danger, and insults, and he was reproached for being a foreigner and a former slave. There was also a very real possibility that the pagans would try to kill him. Despite many obstacles, he remained faithful to his calling, and he baptized many people into Christ.

The saint’s Epistle to Coroticus is also an authentic work. In it he denounces the attack of Coroticus’ men on one of his congregations. The Breastplate (Lorica) is also attributed to St Patrick. In his writings, we can see St Patrick’s awareness that he had been called by God, as well as his determination and modesty in undertaking his missionary work. He refers to himself as “a sinner,” “the most ignorant and of least account,” and as someone who was “despised by many.” He ascribes his success to God, rather than to his own talents: “I owe it to God’s grace that through me so many people should be born again to Him.”

By the time he established his episcopal See in Armargh in 444, St Patrick had other bishops to assist him, many native priests and deacons, and he encouraged the growth of monasticism.

St Patrick is often depicted holding a shamrock, or with snakes fleeing from him. He used the shamrock to illustrate the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. Its three leaves growing out of a single stem helped him to explain the concept of one God in three Persons. Many people now regard the story of St Patrick driving all the snakes out of Ireland as having no historical basis.

St Patrick died on March 17, 461 (some say 492). There are various accounts of his last days, but they are mostly legendary. Muirchu says that no one knows the place where St Patrick is buried. St Columba of Iona (June 9) says that the Holy Spirit revealed to him that Patrick was buried at Saul, the site of his first church. A granite slab was placed at his traditional grave site in Downpatrick in 1899.
